Top load machine
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax
-Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads)
*I make this recipe for my grandma. I've found processing several bars of soap at once and storing in an air tight container is more practical.
*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!
TIPS FOR LAUNDRY SOAP: I have only used Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don't use perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from Amazon. Washing Soda and Borax can often be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2 per batch.
I want to try this sooooo bad! I think it would help with my psoriasis. I just live in a crummy apartment and lack work/storage space to do it on such a large scale. *sad face*
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll do the math to make smaller batches, lol.
On an unrelated note: Was it avocado oil you use for lotion?
Jenn, you will really be surprised at how little space you need. Making the batch as stated takes up little to no space and lasts a long time. You might try replacing the Fels Napa with a pure castile bar soap. I don't think you and Noah need a heavy stain fighting soap. So that might me even more mild on your sensitive skin. I've used the recipe as is for the Alora and she has never had any skin reactions.
ReplyDeleteYes, I primarily use avocado oil or pure vitamin E oil as a replacement for lotions. You might find that coconut oil is more beneficial for your skin type and has a bigger bang for your buck. You can use it as a deep conditioning treatment for your hair and cook with it. I was playing around with the scent before I deployed, because I thought I smelled like a pina colada. But I was always happy to use it at night.
